A small light in a big dark.
Eleven thousand meters down, at the bottom of the Solana Trench, the sun has never been seen. Every creature down there has a light, and every creature uses it for the same thing: luring smaller fish close enough to eat.
Bloop was a very small anglerfish with a very small light. Bloop didn't want to eat anyone. Bloop just liked how the light looked.
One day a lost little fish swam into the dark, scared and alone. Bloop didn't lure it in. Bloop turned its light upward, toward the surface nobody had ever seen, and said:
"I think it's that way. Wanna come?"
Big Mouth, the enormous gulper eel, laughed so hard he burped out a submarine. "Nobody rises from the deep, kid. The pressure crushes everything."
But Bloop kept swimming up. The lost fish followed. Then a jellyfish. Then a squid with a broken glow. Then hundreds of tiny lights, rising from the dark like stars going the wrong way.
They call it The Glow. Nobody knows how far up it goes yet. That's the fun part.
